Where to find horse racing jobs?
I get a job that involves horses racing this summer. I have 15 years and have traveled since I was 2. I've never ridden a thoroughbred, but I have no experience with some high-spirited horses. I love to be a hotwalker or groom, but where I can work? I live in Warren County, New Jersey and some local stables that I can work? Nothing further.
This is the website of New Jersey Association Thoroughbred Breeders: http://www.njbreds.com/ have a magazine, and you can probably get a free sample copy just contact them, they will advertisements for farms that do things like sales preparation, breaking yearlings for two years in sales training, preparation of lay-ups back on track, and so on. You can then contact the farms and the selling agents to see if there are vacancies. To work on a track racing, which should be licensed, and I think the minimum age for licensing for most jobs is 16 tracks. But you not have to be licensed to work in a place of business or training. If I can make a suggestion, the best bet for finding a job would be to look for work in preparation for the sale of calves. Farms that preparing yearlings for sales usually can use help during the time they're getting the horses ready for sale and then on sale for the groom and present them to potential buyers. This is a good entry level job for someone who wants to work in the thoroughbred industry. Especially if you have some basic knowledge of preparing a horse show in halter, although there are differences in showing halter horses and presentation of yearlings for sale. Good luck!
